In August of 2022, Andrea Joyce Heimer did a brief residency at half gallery LA where she painted a suite of new works, some including domestic flourishes from the 1930 Greek Revival mansion where the gallery is located. The new exhibition, “Ghost Story,” is presented in situ given that most of these compositions were created entirely on site. It’s strange to think about ghosts and how they always haunt the houses they’ve inhabited which sort of makes all hauntings in situ performances pieces.

From Robert Gober to Francesca Woodman, the ghostly has maintained a foothold in our collective unconscious. For Andrea the topic takes on a deeper personal resonance, “Like most people, I've had a lot of death around me over the last couple of years - more so than any other time period. These losses have had me thinking about the possibility of other dimensions, life after death and just other ways of existing altogether. I'm a naturally skeptical person, but there's nothing more humbling than how the loss of people you love leaves you scrambling to assemble some other reality where they exist still - where you can see them again.”

Andrea Joyce Heimer (b. 1981, Great Falls, MT; lives and works in Ferndale, Washington) received her MFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire. Her work is currently exhibited at the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham Washington. She has also exhibited at the Missoula Art Museum, Missoula, Montana; Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles; Colombo Gallery, Milan; Linda Hodges Gallery, Seattle; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia and Half Gallery, New York.
