Mark Grotjahn once explained that the difference between non-objective and abstract painting. Non-objective lacks any direct correlation to the real world, for instance, Piet Mondrian, while abstraction literally means to “abstract” from life. In regards to the paintings of Jin Jeong her connection to our reality is undeniable. Her work she describes as “emotional landscapes.”

We look at an expanse of ocean. With our eyes, we note where the sea and sky converge. And do we overweight that line, give the horizon too much credence in the certainty it offers? What about the synapses of blue or the temporal whitecaps made evident at the behest of a brushy breeze. This is what Jin’s washy entanglements remind us. Her compositions seduce the eye with echoes of Helen Frankenthaler in how they bleed and moments of Georgia O’Keefe in their suggestions of bone and rock formations. The artist herself cites Kandinsky’s philosophy on art and the Desert Transcendentalists as inspiration, specifically Agnes Pelton.  “I know my paintings seem to talk about beauty or harmony, but I hope that doesn't read as the main content of my works to the audience. Yes, I may utilize the objectivity of beauty as a visual element, and the painting may be embedded in my preference for harmonized imagery, simply as I would feel in nature.”

Jeong (b. 1993, Seoul), received her BFA from The Art Institute of Chicago in 2017 and an MFA from Hunter College in 2022. Recent exhibitions include Harmonious Arrangement curated by Hiejin Yoo, Half Gallery Los Angeles; Luminous Moment, FAS Seoul and Somewhere to Sit, Another Gallery Los Angeles.
